Kamayán and Me

Sketchbook Ideas Exploration

In this creative journey that I am on and fully embracing, there is no shortage of drawing ideas and projects I want to create [so far, knock on wood]. A blessing and a curse? Where to start and what to do?

How I ended up with “Kamayán” as the project which I am sharing as I go - happened organically. It began with, “I have a brand new website [that no one knows about, haha], and it would be cooool to create something to welcome visitors . . . but it had to be an animation, it had to be fun and cartoon-y, had to represent something about me - deeply and authentically, it would be ideal if I could learn something along the way, reconnect with something in my past - about culture, food would be best…etc, etc.

It started with a GIF and during the many hours of re-drawing, I would read about kamayán on the internet, remembering my youth in the Philippines, which fueled other ideas and stories to illustrate.

The spread can be anything. Some common items, which are illustrated above: rice, lumpia [egg rolls], crispy pata [fried pork], fried chicken, shrimp, burong itlog [salted egg], matamis na mangga [sweet/yellow mango], pork bbq, isda [fish], inihaw na gulay [grilled vegetables], tomatoes, hotdog, sawsawan [variety of dips].
