DRAW DAY: One Sunday morning at Ala Moana Beach Park
Happy local vibes
Wherever you are today
Have a great weekend
We arrived around 9 AM and found parking at the main Magic Island car lot, which was rapidly filling up. Upon opening the rear car door, a cane spider shocked us and scurried away under our vehicle. Talk about a shot of adrenaline right before a run.
Phoebe and I ran a little under a 10k loop, beginning at Magic Island, crossing the bridge to Ala Wai boat harbor, to and through Fort DeRussy, returning to Ala Moana, running its length mauka side to Kewalo harbor, and finally, makai side of Ala Moana back to our car.
DRAWING
The drawing displays the part of the beach we hung out at and the endlessly entertaining characters and activities around us.
We were at the East end of Ala Moana Beach Park/west side of Magic Island, where it's generally coral/reef free and allows easier access to the water. This makes the area family-friendly; for people with young children and larger groups to spread out and set up an outdoor living room Hawai'i style.
Jumping in the water is one of the best ways to end a run.
We stayed for about an hour, going back and forth between the water and napping on the beach, with sprinkles of people watching.
Lots of cute babies, kids playing made-up games (making me reminisce about my childhood with my siblings), BBQ-filled air, seemingly mandatory inflatable fun-house parties, runners, etc. It was sunny, a little windy, and low tide - which made the first 100 feet of water a play tub for the little ones.
The drawing took me about 1.5-2 hours to draw in 3 separate sittings this week. I used it as my 30-minute warm-up first thing in the morning.
