Wrap me like a Lumpia

“Wrap me like a lumpia" is a quote that Phoebe, my wife, said to me a few years back, and we thought it would make for a fun little illustration.

In my immediate family, lumpia is an essential dish because it is THE signature dish my Mom has made over the years in the USA. They are a popular request for gatherings - family, friends, and co-workers alike. The suggestion that they open a business making and selling lumpia is almost as common as the requests.

Some clarification from my perspective since the world of lumpia, egg rolls, and spring rolls and their definitions can be confusing, used interchangeably, or different, and vary wildly from place to place and culture to culture.

There are a few different types of Lumpia, my experience the most common being: Lumpiang Shanghai [Fried] and Lumpiang Sariwa [Fresh].

My Mom's lumpia is the Lumpiang Shanghai.

Commonly in the Philippines, it is an egg roll in a thin wrapper with pork, onion, carrot, egg, and water chestnut [optional].

In the US, we've also used the name Egg Rolls since that's what most people in Massachusetts called them [when they were making the request]. I did "half-assed internet research" and agreed with the distinction that it is a broader term. Most Americans use it as a catch-all for most little rolled-up fried appetizers. Lumpia is an egg roll. But not all egg rolls are lumpia.
